Mall Police Proposal Endorsed By Kuwait Panel

17 July 2022 Kuwait

According to a Kuwaiti newspaper, a Kuwaiti parliamentary committee has approved the establishment of police stations in shopping centers to enhance security and deter violence.

Police manning the envisaged facilities will have full power to arrest offenders, according to Al Qabas, who chairs the assembly's Interior and Defence Committee.

Police stations will be established in shopping malls, markets and remote areas, and surveillance cameras will be installed.

Those opposed to the proposal at the panel believe that private security companies do the job already, so it is unnecessary to introduce police into shopping centers.

The proposal's proponents, however, argue that it was prompted by a recent surge of violent crimes involving youth in coastal parks and commercial complexes.

The country of Kuwait, which has 4.6 million residents, has seen a number of violent incidents in recent months, some culminating in murders.
