Kuwait's Liberation Day: A Historic Journey Of Solidarity And Triumph
The 33rd anniversary of Kuwait's Liberation Day stands as a testament to the indomitable spirit of its people and their resolute determination to reclaim their sovereignty. On February 26, 1991, Kuwait emerged from the shadows of Iraqi invasion, showcasing unwavering resolve and an unwavering belief in victory.
In the wake of the brutal Iraqi aggression that commenced on August 2, 1990, Kuwait rallied behind the legitimacy of the Al-Sabah family's rule. This call for legitimacy garnered unprecedented international support, in alignment with the principles of the United Nations (UN) Charter.
Key figures in Kuwait's foreign policy landscape, including the late Amir Sheikh Jaber AlAhmad Al Jaber Al-Sabah, the late Father Amir Sheikh Saad Al-Abdullah, and the late Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, played pivotal roles in affirming Kuwait's legitimacy on the global stage, ultimately leading to its complete liberation.
Through concerted efforts in international and regional forums, Kuwait garnered widespread support. The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) and the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) were crucial arenas where Kuwait's plight was championed, condemning the Iraqi invasion and demanding immediate withdrawal.
Resolution 660, issued by the UNSC on August 3, 1990, condemned Iraq's invasion of Kuwait and demanded its immediate withdrawal. Subsequent resolutions reinforced Kuwait's sovereignty and rejected Iraq's annexation attempts.
The escalation prompted peace-loving nations to form an international coalition, culminating in the deployment of forces to the region. Resolution 678 authorized member states to use all necessary means to liberate Kuwait, leading to the initiation of Operation Desert Storm.
On January 17, 1991, coalition forces launched a decisive ground attack on Iraqi positions in Kuwait, swiftly dismantling Iraqi defenses. The coordinated efforts of 30 nations, equipped with cutting-edge technology, heralded the liberation of Kuwait within weeks.
After seven arduous months of occupation, Kuwait emerged free and proud, symbolizing a triumph of solidarity and resilience.
