Kuwait's Fishing Industry Faces A Diesel Shortage

20 November 2023 Kuwait

The Kuwait Fishermen Union says the diesel crisis has affected market prices, especially since Sharq and Fahaheel markets are almost devoid of local products. As if we are revolving in a vicious circle, supply is much lower than before, and prices are rising due to the lack of supply. Before we reach a dead end, urgent solutions must be developed. There is a lot of concern among fishermen about selling their licenses and boats, and relieving their workers due to the high operational costs and the insufficient supply of subsidized diesel.

The union stated in a press release that the cost of a basket of shrimp reached KD 100.

The Kuwait Fishermen Union is experiencing a situation that no other food security union has encountered.

The decision to subsidize half of the diesel quota and leave the other half unsubsidized has disastrous consequences and will discourage fishermen from going to sea. Due to unsubsidized diesel, the cost of a fishing trip will double from KD 400 to KD 600. Fishing in the sea will then be pointless and result in even more losses for the fishermen.

According to the union, the Subsidy Committee should reconsider its decision and disburse the full share.

As it stated, the subsidy committee did not find a justification for stopping the diesel share at times and reducing it to half at other times, and then returning half of the diesel share as subsidized and the other half as unsubsidized. Exactly this was the cause of the anger among fishing license holders. Their curiosity is piqued about the reasons behind the fight against local shrimp and fish products.

We often hear from officials about the importance of supporting local products, but unfortunately they are just slogans. As we see with the issue of withholding subsidized diesel, there are those who deliberately put obstacles in front of the local product. "It's as if someone is trying to eliminate this ancient traditional profession of fishing and relying on imported products to replace it."
