Kuwait Records 4,500 Heart Attacks In The Past 7 Months
In the past seven months, Kuwait has witnessed a concerning spike in heart attacks, with 4,500 registered cases, prompting a call for enhanced measures to combat this health issue. Dr. Mohammad Zubaid, President of the Gulf Health Association (GHA) and a Board of Directors member at the Kuwait Heart Foundation (KHF), emphasized the need for increased awareness and improved response strategies during the 15th GHA meeting, conducted in collaboration with KHF.
Dr. Zubaid highlighted a notable discrepancy in the arrival of stroke patients at hospitals, with only 20 percent utilizing ambulances compared to 90 percent in European countries. This disparity impacts the speed of treatment, underscoring the necessity for intensified awareness campaigns to educate the public on dealing with heart attacks.
Recognizing heart disease as a leading cause of mortality locally and globally, Kuwait has dedicated efforts over the past 15 years to ensure the availability of heart and chronic disease medications in all healthcare facilities, including primary health care centers and public hospitals.
Dr. Zubaid also disclosed Kuwait's achievements in performing heart transplant operations, with one conducted this year and another last year. The 15th GHA meeting brought together participants from various countries, providing a platform for regional doctors to discuss diseases specific to the area.
Established 21 years ago, GHA has played a crucial role in supporting scientific research related to heart diseases, fostering collaborations with prestigious organizations such as the European Heart Association, the American Heart Association, and the World Heart Association. This collaboration has enabled Gulf-based cardiologists to take the European Association's cardiology exam, contributing to the acquisition of internationally recognized certifications.
Dr. Rashed Al-Owaish, the Secretary General of KHF, highlighted the foundation's commitment to spreading awareness about heart health through campaigns and mobile testing units equipped with specialized medical supplies and doctors. Emphasizing the foundation's dedication to Kuwait's international obligations and global development goals, Dr. Al-Owaish affirmed its ongoing role in promoting heart health and prevention.
