Kuwait Municipal Bribery Case: Ten-Year Prison Sentences

The Court of Cassation upheld the ruling issued by the Court of Appeals that sentenced a Municipal Council member and former official of the Kuwait Municipality to ten years in prison. It also sentenced a businessman to five years imprisonment with hard labor.

As part of the municipal bribery case, both defendants were fined large sums of money as well. Last March, the Criminal Court, presided over by Judge Nayef Al-Dahoum, sentenced a member of the Municipal Council and an employee to ten years imprisonment, dismissed them from their jobs, and obliged them to pay fines. In addition, a businessman was sentenced to five years imprisonment with hard labor for bribery and abuse of office. In the case file, the court charged the Municipal Council member with abuse of office and bribery of KD 100,000 for voting on a land transaction in the council and registering it in the name of a company.
