Kuwait Has More Than 26,000 Unemployed Citizens Despite Kuwaitization

According to Al-Shall, the Public Authority for Civil Information released the latest population and employment statistics in December 2022, showing a population of about 4.737 million.

In 2022, the population increased by about 351.2 thousand people, compared to the end of 2021, reaching approximately 4.386 million (4.217 million, according to the Central Administration of Statistics). The absolute decline of the whole of 2021 was about 285 thousand people, with a decline of 6.1% in 2021 compared to a decline of 2.2% in 2020.

With a growth rate of about 1.9%, Kuwait's population increased by about 28.8 thousand people in 2022. This brought their total number to about 1.518 million people. According to the latest numbers, the percentage of Kuwaitis in the total population declined from 33.94% at the end of 2021, to 32.04%.

The weekly stated that Kuwaiti females numbered around 773.1 thousand, surpassing Kuwaiti males, who numbered 744.4 thousand. The non-Kuwaiti population increased by 322.4 thousand people, or an increased rate of 11.1%, to reach about 3.219 million people, with a compound annual growth rate during 2013-2022 that amounted to around 1.9%.

The total number of workers in Kuwait reached 2.858 million or 60.3% of the total population, and the percentage of Kuwaitis reached 31.7% of the total population. About 73.8% of the total non-Kuwaiti population are non-Kuwaiti workers.

According to Al-Shall, the percentage of Kuwaitis working out of the total number of workers in the country decreased from 18.1% to about 16.8% as of December 2022 when compared to the end of 2021. In Kuwait, the percentage of female employees stabilized at 51.1% by the end of 2022 and as of 2021. The percentage of female employment out of the total employment in Kuwait was 29.5%.

The number of Kuwaiti workers increased by about twelve thousand, to about four hundred and eighty-one thousand workers, up from about four hundred and sixty-nine thousand workers at the end of 2021, with 380.6 thousand government workers making up 79.1% of Kuwaiti workers in general.

In 2022, Kuwaitis were unemployed for 26.1 thousand workers, or 5.4% of the total number of Kuwaiti workers, up from 25.4 thousand workers at the end of 2021.

A total of 492.9 thousand workers (Kuwaitis and non-Kuwaitis) were employed in the government sector, approximately 10.4% of the population. According to the same source, 77.2% of Kuwaitis work in the government sector, although the official numbers from the source are unreliable.
