Kuwait Beaches Are Covered In Pearls
High waves and tidal action wash oysters that may contain pearls ashore on Kuwaiti beaches from Fahaheel to Nuwaiseeb during the Al Sarayat season.
Walid Al-Fadil, the head of the diving squad, described it as a "national phenomenon." "The presence of oysters on the beaches of various sizes at this time is normal," he told a local Arabic daily, "as long as their numbers are in the hundreds," adding that "the matter becomes unnatural if the numbers are in the thousands, as happened nine years ago due to the earthworks when the oysters suffocated and died."
"We are facing a normal situation in which algae abounds on the coast due to high waves, which is common in Kuwait and occurs in the area between Fahaheel and Nuwaiseeb," Al-Fadhel said, adding that "some of these oysters contain pearls and are found especially in the area of Al-Zour, Nuwaiseeb, and Julai'a in small sizes, but not all oysters are full of pearls."
