Indian Sailors Go On Hunger Strike For Non Payment Of Salaries

17 January 2021 Kuwait

About 16 Indian sailors are stranded on board the ULA vessel. The Vessel has been detained for 9 months which has led the Indian sailors on board to go on hunger strike due to non-payment of salaries, Al Qabas reported.

The reason for detention on the port of Shuaiba is a legal dispute between the ship’s owner and the owner of the cargo, Al Qabas reported quoting responsible sources.

Last week, the Undersecretary of the Ministry of Communications, Ms. Kholoud Al-Shehab, met with Indian Ambassador Seibi George to discuss the implications of the ULA vessel’s detention.

The ministry confirmed that high-level coordination between several parties has taken place, and the ship’s file is being settled within the next few days.

In this regard, a responsible source told the daily that “Ministry is following the complaint of the crew of the ULA vessel vigilantly and the fact that the crew has been detained in the port of Shuaiba for 9 months, which had led them to go on hunger strike”.

The Kuwaiti Society for Basic Principles for Human Rights said. “The association has contacted officials in government agencies and the National Office for Human Rights, to expedite the treatment of the issue, in appreciation of the unfortunate humanitarian situation and to preserve the image of the country of humanity”.
