In the seventh edition of the 'Tabacco Atlas' report, an anti-smoking initiative issued by the American Cancer Society, Kuwait consumers smoke an average of 1,849 cigarettes per year, the second-highest rate in the region after Lebanon, whose average consumption is 1,955 cigarettes, and more than Libya, at 1,764. Saudi Arabia has a smoking rate of 485 cigarettes per capita, while the UAE has a rate of 438 cigarettes.

Smoking still remains the world's leading cause of death among 1.1 billion smokers worldwide, as well as hundreds of millions of others using other tobacco products.

Tobacco use has devastating health and economic consequences, according to the report. As of 2019, tobacco consumption caused 8.67 million deaths worldwide, with 2.14 million men and 6.53 million women, plus an estimated 2 trillion dollars in economic losses.

Smoking is the leading cause of death, but secondhand smoke caused 1.3 million deaths. The HDI (human development index) was high in several countries where tobacco-related deaths were high in 2019.

Nevertheless, deaths from tobacco-related illnesses are expected to increase in countries with low HDIs in the coming years.
