New Customs Rules In India - Guide For Carrying Gold And Other Items
Gold has always been an invaluable investment, more so for women across the globe. In places like Kuwait, Indian expatriates and tourists have been particularly interested in purchasing gold due to the tax-free prices and previously lenient customs regulations. However, changes have been made in the customs rules in India that everyone should be aware of.
Carrying Gold
Non-resident Indians (NRIs) and tourists who have resided in foreign countries for more than a year can carry gold up to certain limits when returning to India.
Women can carry 40 grams of gold of 22 carats.
Men can carry 20 grams of gold of 22 carats.
If you carry more than these limits or even 1 gram of 24-carat gold, you must pay a customs duty.
The Mandatory Hallmarking Rule
India, one of the world's largest markets for gold, has introduced mandatory hallmarking on gold jewelry and related items to ensure their purity and fineness. While these rules apply to gold jewelry made and sold in India, customers can purchase and sell gold outside of India and ensure its purity using karat analysers.
Electronics, Currency, and Other Items
Individuals can carry only one laptop without paying customs duty.
The total worth of items like iPhones and other electronics should not exceed 50,000 INR. If the value is more, customs duty is applicable.
If you're carrying foreign currency worth more than 5,000 USD, you must declare it.
Even if customs were paid for an object abroad, customs in India will still need to be paid for the same item.
Individuals over 18 years can carry up to 2 litres of alcohol without paying customs.
Conclusion
Gold remains a valuable investment worldwide and a popular purchase among Indian expats and tourists. However, the new customs rules have introduced certain limits on the quantity and quality of gold and other items one can carry when returning to India. Hence, it's essential to stay updated with these regulations when planning to bring goods back to India from abroad.
