MP Thamer Al-Suwait has called on the legislative and executive authorities to cooperate in ratifying important draft laws.
In a press statement, Al-Suwait pointed out the Assembly was late in approving draft laws — especially those beneficial to citizens such as the bill on reducing the retirement age and interest rate for insurance, military personnel bonus, economic reform document, and regulating prices of services and commodities like electricity, water and gasoline.
He stressed the need for everyone to realize that the Assembly is based on two pillars — legislation and oversight. He added, “The current Assembly entered the second round of its session without any legislative achievement and this means there is a flaw in the course of its work which must be corrected.” He voiced objection to the government’s intention to withdraw the report on the proposed reduction of retirement age for further study, stressing that the bill got majority support in the Assembly and they will not allow the government to disrupt it.
Furthermore, MP Mohammed Al-Huwailah asked the government to cooperate in approving the report of the parliamentary Finance Committee on amending some provisions of Amiri Decree No. 61/1976 on the Social Security Law which aims to reduce the retirement period and age for Kuwaiti employees to 25 years in service and age 50 for men, and 20 years in service and age 45 for women.
The lawmaker disclosed he is one of the proponents of this proposal whose objectives include generating more jobs for new graduates and solving many problems of the State, especially the unemployment issue. He stressed this proposal, once approved, will contribute to ongoing efforts to prevent accumulation of unnecessary employees in government agencies, give youths a chance to take on responsibilities in ministries, and allow women to take care of their families.
A parliamentary source disclosed that an interpellation request against Minister of Social Affairs and Labor and State Minister for Economic Affairs Hind Al-Sabeeh will be submitted on Wednesday.
The source said MPs Mubarak Al-Hajraf, Khalid Al-Otaibi and Al-Humaidi Al-Subaiei will present the interpellation motion focusing on five points or more including the alleged violations, social assistance, expatriates, cooperative societies and the handicapped. Meanwhile, the parliamentary Health, Social and Labor Affairs Committee will discuss on Sunday the latest developments regarding the Health Insurance Bill in the presence of the board chairman of Hospitals Health Insurance Company.
