Economic Growth To Be Ignited With 3% Remittance Tax

28 September 2023 Kuwait

According to Fahad bin Jamee, three percent of remittance amounts should be charged for remittances.

According to him, Kuwait sends roughly KD 5 billion or $17 billion in remittances each year, indicating that neighboring countries such as Saudi Arabia and Bahrain used to impose such fees.

Banks and money exchange companies violating the law should be penalized, the lawmaker urged.

In addition, MP Fahad bin Jame'e submitted another proposal for exceptional indemnity for non-ranked military officers at Kuwait Army, National Guard, Kuwait Fire Service Directorate, and Ministry of Interior.

It is a violation of the principle of justice and equality that the decisions issued by the Ministerial Council of Ministers stipulated granting exceptional indemnity to the officers who retired after 2010, but did not include non-ranked officers.

Moreover, MP Abdulhadi Al-Ajmi submitted parliamentary questions to His Highness the Prime Minister Sheikh Ahmad Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah regarding the issue of conflict of interest in the appointment of Minister of Education, Higher Education and Scientific Research Adel Al Mane'e.

After leaving Kuwait University (KU), Sheikh Ahmad Nawaf Al-Sabah was asked whether he was aware of the violations concerning the promotion of Al-Mane’e as a lecturer at the College of Law, based on the appointment as Secretary General of the Council of Public Sector Universities, which means he is no longer a member of the university.

According to the lawmaker, there are suspicions of conflict of interest between the Kuwait University administration and the Council of Public Sector Universities.

A committee formed by the Acting President of Kuwait University to name its president was approved by the Council of Public Sector Universities, according to MP Al-Ajmi, with pressure placed on the College of Law to continue promoting Al-Mane'e, despite KU regulations prohibiting such promotion.

When Al-Manee was appointed Minister of Education, Higher Education, and Scientific Research, he asked Sheikh Ahmad Nawaf Al-Sabah if he was aware of such violations.

It's not just about the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Higher Education, according to the legislator. It's about the procedures used to appoint senior officials, which have a negative or positive impact on government performance and public institutions.

Abdul Kareem Al-Kandari, another MP, called on the government to take much stronger action than merely submitting a protest letter against Iraq's recent actions regarding the agreement signed with Kuwait to organize marine movements in Abdullah Port.

174 Iraqi MPs signed a statement asking the UN to send a copy of the ruling issued by the Iraqi Federal Court that nullified the Kuwait-Kuwait agreement, in addition to the Iraqi Government's decision to revoke the security protocol signed by Kuwait and Iraq, he said. There is no longer just the problem of bad intentions from the Iraqi party; there is also the attitude of hostility.
