Domestic Workers Feel Unsecure In Kuwait And Are Reluctant To Come
Bassam Al-Shammari, a specialist in domestic labor affairs, said overcrowding by domestic workers at their country's embassies has become a regular occurrence.
It was revealed to a local Arabic daily by Al-Shammari that one of Kuwait's largest exporters of domestic workers is bursting with female workers in its compound. Some of them were reported as 'absconders' by their employers, or involved in a fight with their sponsors, or were unable to resolve labor disputes in a friendly manner by their employers.
He attributed the reason behind the exacerbation of this phenomenon again to the decline of the role entrusted to the Manpower Protection Sector in the authority, which is based on the speedy containment of disputes that may erupt between female workers and their employers, revealing that this accumulation prompted some embassies to issue internal circulars requiring the non-ratification of contracts for any local recruitment company or office with more than 5 domestic workers encountering problems with their sponsors.
He called upon all relevant authorities, led by the Department of Regulating Domestic Work Recruitment, to correct past mistakes, and to prevent domestic workers from running to their embassies. This phenomenon demonstrates the government's inability to find radical solutions to the crisis, since it is one of the reasons some countries refuse to send domestic workers.
Since the concerned authorities are unwilling to provide them with legal protection, or a solution to their disputes with their employers, he warned of the increased labor disputes and the consequent reluctance of new female workers to come to Kuwaiti.
