Christie's Predicts "rock" Will Fetch $30 Million At Auction

07 May 2022 International

The world's biggest white diamond will be auctioned next week in Geneva as part of a Christie's sale that also includes two precious stones weighing more than 200 carats apiece.

According to a local Arabic newspaper, Christie's stated the pear-shaped 'Rock' diamond weighs 228.31 carats and is projected to sell for around $30 million.

"Some shape is often lost in order to preserve weight with these huge stones," said Max Fausset, director of jewellery at Christie's. "Perfectly proportioned pear-shaped diamond is one of the rarest diamonds ever to be auctioned," he continued.

Diamond prices have recovered due to sanctions imposed on Russia, the world's largest producer, as well as the resumption of high-profile events following the relaxation of limitations imposed to combat the Coronavirus.

The Rock diamond was mined and polished in South Africa, and the previous white diamond auction record was set in 2017 with a stone measuring 163.41 carats.

Because an undefined amount of the auction revenues will go to the International Committee of the Red Cross in Geneva, Christie's is also selling a yellow 205.07-carat cushion-shaped "Red Cross Diamond."
