Bullying And Violence In Schools Negatively Affect Students

02 November 2022 Kuwait

School violence and bullying are global problems that require specialists to come up with concrete solutions to limit the spread, particularly since they negatively affect students' academic progress and social lives. The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) says violence in the school environment violates children's and adolescents' education and health.

In a press release, UNESCO Member States declared the first Thursday of November the International Day against Violence and Bullying at Schools, including Cyberbullying, in recognition of the fact that school-related violence in all its forms violates the rights of children and adolescents to education, health, and well-being. According to the statement, Member States, UN partners, other international and regional organizations, as well as civil society, nongovernmental organizations, individuals, and other stakeholders, are encouraged to promote, celebrate, and facilitate international day.

For the safety and wellbeing of children and youth, this day calls upon students, parents, members of the educational community, education authorities, and a variety of sectors and partners, including the tech industry, to take action in preventing online violence. According to Kuwait University's Dr. Nasser Al-Munai, bullying takes many forms, whether it is verbal, physical, or material. The main reason is within the family and the way parents teach their children, as well as peer pressure to continue bullying if there is no response.

In addition, Al-Munai noted parents play a crucial role in creating a bullying figure against others by creating a tough learning environment. Also, the doctor stressed the importance of building trust and a safe place to resort to in that case because the victims' silence, lack of confrontation or real results by those affected by bullying, resulting in the growing problem of bullying and violence in society.

The Director of Oqba bin Nafie Intermediate School, Mishaan Al-Theferi, told KUNA that bullying cases have increased recently due to the increased number of students and divorce cases. According to Al-Theferi, the increase in violence and bullying has different effects on the victims, some feel they lose confidence, some lose concentration, others retreat socially, and some experience academic struggles.

According to Al-Theferi, students who experience bullying usually abandon school, feel ashamed, and fear other students who bully them. Teachers play an important role in making school a safe place for all students on the 2022 International Day against Violence and Bullying at School including Cyberbullying.

The solution starts with teachers, who need to feel empowered, capable, and ready to act. There is still a need for more training and stronger support from the school and beyond. School violence can be devastating. The children and young people affected can find it difficult to concentrate in class, miss classes, or drop out of school altogether. This has an adverse impact on academic achievement and future prospects.

Creating an atmosphere of anxiety, fear, and insecurity is incompatible with learning and undermines everyone's ability to learn. An international seminar will be hosted by UNESCO on 3 November 2022, at UNESCO headquarters in Paris, as well as online, focusing on this year's theme, "Not on my watch: the role of teachers in preventing and addressing school violence."
