Authorities Are Adjusting Schoolchildren And Government Staff Timing

05 September 2023 Kuwait

There is just one week left until the start of the school year, and a joint committee of representatives from the Interior, Education, and Higher Education ministries, along with the Civil Service Commission and Public Authority for Manpower, is reviewing proposals to adjust school hours and government employees' schedules. These adjustments are intended to help alleviate the anticipated traffic congestion as employees return from their summer break.

A reliable source told Al-Jarida daily that the Ministry of Education has proposed several changes to the working hours of its employees across several levels, including the Ministry's central office, administrative bodies, educational districts, and schools. School hours are being modified based on academic stages, with no more than 15 minutes between each stage being allowed. This approach is being explored to minimize any disruption to students’ daily schedules.

With more than 90,000 teachers and administrators returning to their respective schools next Sunday, the new academic year for 2023/2024 will begin. A joint committee of representatives from the Ministry of Interior, Education, and Higher Education, as well as the Civil Service Commission, the Manpower Authority, and the Schools Union, is meeting today at the Ministry of Interior's Private School.

Their discussion will revolve around the working hours of both public and private school employees and government agency employees, including how to manage shift schedules effectively to minimize traffic congestion as employees return to their workplaces following summer vacation.

According to educational sources, the Ministry of Education has implemented flexible working hours for its general office and central department employees.

Flexible hours are divided into three periods, with a 30-minute interval between the start and end times of each sector. This measure has contributed to reducing overcrowding around the Ministry of Education’s building in the South Surra area. However, it’s important to note that the working hours of employees in educational areas are closely linked to school hours, and any potential changes must consider the impact on traffic congestion.

We will engage with each stakeholder to understand their perspectives and explore the feasibility of modifying schedules to alleviate traffic congestion. A final opinion will be provided on how to address all proposals and traffic patterns by the Ministry of Interior, represented by the General Traffic Department.
