An Iraqi national convicted of smuggling drugs into Kuwait using hang gliders has been sentenced to seven years in prison by an appellate court, according to a local news portal.

Mediacourt, a legal news website that covers court cases and legal affairs, reported that the court had confirmed the same custodial sentence for his Kuwaiti accomplice.

The exact timing of the smuggling activities at the center of the case is unclear.

One million drug pills were reported to have been shot down by Iraq, a close neighbor of Kuwait.

Earlier, Al Qabas reported that Kuwait had arrested 3,000 people for drug offenses last year and seized record quantities of narcotics.

Of the offenders, 1,500 were Kuwaitis, 800 were stateless Bidoons, 300 were Egyptian expatriates and the rest hailed from Lebanon, Syria, India, Bangladesh, and Pakistan, according to the report.

The Kuwaiti government deported about 866 more expatriates for possession of small amounts of drugs or for taking drugs that did not justify criminal proceedings.

Kuwaiti antidrug police seized 1,700kg of hashish during the past year, the largest haul in a single year.

A high dose of methamphetamine was also seized, according to the sources, along with 10 million pills and 30 kilograms of heroin.

The death penalty is applied in drug cases in Kuwait.
