7 Kuwait Judges Were Sentenced To Seven Years In Prison For Bribery

21 October 2023 Crime News

On Thursday, Kuwait's Court of Cassation sentenced seven judges to seven years in prison each for bribery. During the landmark case, Kuwait's judicial immunity was lifted for the first time in its history.

In 2020, the Public Prosecution unearthed communications linking Iranian Fouad Salehi to 10 judges while investigating him for money laundering.

Kuwaiti Interior Ministry agents arrested Salehi in August 2020 on charges of money laundering and bribery against several Kuwaiti officials, including eight judges.

One judge was acquitted, while two businessmen implicated in the scandal were sentenced to 12 years each and ordered to pay fines. A lawyer was sentenced to 10 years and a department head to seven years, both with labor and enforcement provisions.

Another lawyer and three court employees were not punished, maintaining the innocence of a former court official.

In October, the Court of Appeal forced the seven convicted judges to return cars and gifts they received from Salehi in the money laundering case, as well as dismissing them.
