400% Surge In Waste Collection After Mangaf Fire Highlights Safety Concerns

15 June 2024 Kuwait

In the aftermath of the tragic Mangaf fire, awareness regarding apartment safety regulations in Kuwait has surged, leading to a significant increase in waste collection. The Kuwait Municipality has reported a staggering 400% rise in waste over the past two days, primarily consisting of unwanted items accumulated in various apartment buildings.

Muhammad Sandan, the Director of the Public Relations Department and official spokesman for Kuwait Municipality, revealed that an estimated 568 tons of waste were collected from investment and commercial residential properties across all six governorates on Thursday and Friday. This volume is notably four times higher than the usual daily waste collection, which typically ranges between 100 and 150 tons in these areas.

Sandan issued a stern warning to building owners, stating that hygiene departments in all governorates would impose penalties on those who dispose of rubble and waste in front of their properties. He urged property owners to proactively remove these violations, as regulations mandate that property owners are responsible for clearing rubble and waste to avoid penalties.

He emphasized that municipal teams are dedicated to strictly enforcing municipal rules and regulations. They are committed to ensuring the removal of waste, filing reports, and issuing violations against offenders.
