394 Indians In Kuwait Have Committed Suicide In 10 Years
Every year people in Kuwait have been ending their lives for various reasons and according to official statistics the Indian community tops the list of people who have ended their lives or rather committed suicides, reports Al-Rai daily.
The statistics, a copy of which has been obtained by the Al-Rai daily, show 394 Indians have committed suicide during the past 10 years (from 2007 to 2017), – 331 men and 63 women.
Year 2016 recorded the highest number of suicides committed by 42 Indians compared to 7 natural deaths.
An Indian human rights activist said the spread of this phenomenon was for many reasons, mostly psychological and economic, indicating that some committed suicide because they were deceived by Indian employment agencies who sold them illusions when the reality was something else since some of them had even mortgaged their homes to obtain a work visa in Kuwait.
A study by the Lancet medical journal found that Indians represent about 36.6 percent of women who commit suicide around the world, and that 15 out of every 100,000 women in India still commit suicide, more than double the global average (seven in every 100,000).
India’s suicide rate is also high, accounting for 24 percent of men worldwide, with a national average of 10.6 suicides per 100,000 people in 2014.
According to a recent study by psychiatrists, the number of suicides in the state of Kerala in southern India is the highest among the Indian states. Of every 100,000 suicides in India during the year, 32 are from Kerala.
