36 Species Of Birds, Fish And Mammals Threatened With Extinction In Kuwaiti Environment

15 December 2021 Kuwait

The report on the evaluation of sustainable production and consumption in Kuwait for 2021, which was recently launched by the Environment Public Authority, makes a mention of a number of environmental facts and data that must be taken into account when preparing general plans and strategies.

The report, according to Al-Anba, stated the share of agriculture in the GDP is 0.4%, which is described by concerned sources as very small, and requires serious thinking about finding agricultural solutions that can achieve food security in light of existing capabilities and techniques to achieve this, stressing there are a number of solutions that can be applied and implemented; studies such as model farms and the use of greenhouse techniques, but they are still very shy and must be supported in a way that makes them huge projects that allow for self-sufficiency.

The report stated that the total installed electric capacity in the country, according to the reports issued by the Ministry of Electricity and Water for 2016 was 18,850 megawatts, while the per capita share of electric power is 14 kilowatt hours, referring to high consumption.

In this regard, the sources stressed the need to rationalize consumption and develop energy management plans to preserve state resources and expedite the implementation of renewable energy projects that reduce the environmental burden, and at the same time reduce oil consumption as depleted energy.

The report also said that there are a significant number of birds, fish and mammals in the Kuwaiti environment threatened with extinction, specifically 11 species of birds, 18 species of fish and 7 species of mammals.

In light of the decline in the volume of fish catches, the report pointed to the trend towards fish farming, which the sources described as still ‘timid’, as the production of aquaculture reached 197 metric tons for 2018, while the production of fisheries reached 2,817 metric tons in the same year, according to the statistics issued by the Food and Agriculture Organization on profiles for fisheries and aquaculture in Kuwait.

The report added, the size of the protected areas, whether marine or terrestrial, in the country amounts to 11.6 of the total area of the country in the 2020, according to the Kuwaiti Monitoring Information System, a percentage that the sources see as relatively few, as there is a plan within the Environment Public Authority to raise the percentage of protected areas in the country to 20%.

They detailed the size of the terrestrial protected areas at 8.68% of the total land, while the marine protected areas were 2.95% of the total area.
