35.7 Thousand Patents Processed In Kuwait In 2023, Sparking Innovation

The Department of Intellectual Property Rights and Patent Protection at the Ministry of Commerce and Industry processed approximately 35.7 thousand patents for individuals and companies in 2023. This figure accounts for a significant portion of the total transactions completed by the department during the same period, reaching about 61.6 thousand. Moreover, the total fees collected for these transactions amounted to about 5.8 million dinars.

The statistics obtained by Al-Anbaa revealed that during the year 2023, the administration received approximately 35.7 thousand applications for patent filing, trademark registration, and publication. The total fees amounted to about 3.45 million dinars.

Additionally, it registered 13.2 thousand trademarks, with total fees reaching 597.3 thousand dinars, and published 11.8 thousand trademarks, with total fees amounting to 295.8 thousand dinars.

Furthermore, the administration processed registrations and issued certificates for 10.6 thousand trademarks, with a total fee of 255.6 thousand dinars. Lastly, the administration received five applications for collective trademark registration, totaling 475 dinars in fees.

Regarding trademark renewal applications during the last six months from the date of expiration of protection or the last year of the protection period, the total number of applications completed by the administration during the past year reached 6,346 transactions, with a total value of 1.7 million dinars.

Regarding the visas completed by the administration during 2023, their total number reached 6,467 transactions, with a total value of 221 thousand dinars.

These visas included transactions for changing the address of the trademark owner, changing the name of the trademark owner, transferring trademark ownership, changing the name and address of the trademark owner or agent, changing the name of the registration agent, initial examination of the trademark, modifying the form of the trademark, noting a license to use a trademark, requesting the cancellation of part of the goods and services, and requesting the cancellation of the registration of a trademark from the owner.

Objection requests

The same statistics showed that the administration received 316 objections to accepting the registration of a trademark, with a total fee amounting to 27.7 thousand dinars, distributed among 270 requests to object to accepting the registration of a trademark and 46 requests to schedule a hearing.

Publication requests

As for requests to publish trademarks and intellectual property, their total number during the year 2023 reached about 12.3 thousand applications with a total fee amounting to 437.8 thousand dinars. These applications were divided into 6,347 applications to publish the renewal of the trademark, 1,634 applications to publish the transfer of trademark ownership, and 48 applications to publish an amendment to the form of the trademark.

Additionally, there were 3,852 applications to publish an amendment to the name or address of the trademark owner or agent, 265 applications to publish a license, 4 applications to publish a collective mark, control marks, or marks of public benefit bodies or professional institutions, and 176 applications to publish an application after deleting part of the goods and services.

Register of agents

On the same note, the department received about 26 applications for the Agents Register during the past year, with a total fee amounting to 3,640 dinars. Among these, 8 applications were for registering a trademark registration agent in the Agents Register, while 18 applications were for renewing registration in the Agents Register.

Grievances

Regarding the grievances received by the administration during the past year, the total number reached 117 requests to complain against the decision to refuse to register a trademark or to suspend it on a condition, with total fees amounting to 5,265 thousand dinars.

Extracts

Finally, statistics showed that the total number of extracts completed by the administration throughout the world amounted to 250 extracts to obtain a true copy or a replacement for a lost registration certificate, with a total fee of 11.2 thousand dinars.
