2023 Traffic Safety Success: Increased Awareness, Reduced Fatalities
In 2023, the impactful traffic awareness campaign initiated during the Unified Gulf Traffic Week in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries demonstrated significant success in curbing road accidents and reducing fatalities. Major Abdullah Bu Hassan, from the Public Relations and Traffic Awareness Section in the General Traffic Department (GTD) of the Interior Ministry, revealed that the country saw a decrease in traffic-related deaths, with 296 reported in 2023 compared to 322 in the previous year, 2022.
The comprehensive campaign featured diverse awareness programs delivered through radio and television, informative lectures, and the engagement of influencers. Its primary objective was to enforce strict adherence to traffic laws, discourage reckless behavior, mitigate negative phenomena, and educate individuals detained in the Preventive Detention Cell at GTD for serious violations.
Major Abdullah Bu Hassan highlighted several contributing factors, including the installation of traffic control cameras. These cameras effectively monitor violations both directly and indirectly, with dedicated employees in the control room issuing citations promptly. The implementation of a monitoring application for security personnel further streamlined the process of identifying and apprehending traffic regulation violators by storing accurate data in the computer system. The 'Sahl' and 'Rased' platforms played a crucial role, issuing warnings to violators through 'Sahl' and enhancing parental control through 'Rased,' thereby promoting responsible behavior among children.
Public awareness campaigns played a vital role in reducing road accident deaths. These campaigns focused on educating the public about the dangers on the roads, proper ways to handle sudden vehicle breakdowns and minor accidents, and organizing the movement of delivery bikes to keep them away from hazardous roads.
