2 Citizens Jailed 4 Years For Consuming Drugs
The Court of Appeals, presided over by Judge Ali Al-Dureai, overturned the verdict of the First Instance Court which sentenced two citizens to four years in prison with hard labor. The higher court acquitted the two citizens of all charges level against them, including possession of hashish and crystal meth for personal consumption and driving under the influence of narcotics and brain stimulants. Case files indicate that the arresting officer said he was manning a police checkpoint on Kabad Road late night when a car passed without stopping, prompting him to chase it and stop it forcibly.
When the car stopped, the two accused attempted to flee on foot, but the officer together with his partner managed to catch up with them and arrest them. One of the suspects was later discovered to be wanted by the law in connection to a civil case. While the officer was driving the car of the accused back to the checkpoint, he saw a small sachet containing substance that appeared to be narcotics or brain stimulant. Both suspects admitted that the narcotics belong to them and they intended to consume the substance.
In their defense was Attorney Enaam Haydar who argued that the arrest and search procedures followed by the police officers were illegal, so all other procedures taken, including medical examination, are not valid. Meanwhile, the Criminal Court on Sunday will look into the case of AbdulAziz Al-Shamlan who has been accused of running over and stabbing police officers and killing martyr Turki Al-Enezi.
Case files indicate the Public Prosecution charged Al-Shamlan with first degree murder as he intended to kill by running over several police officers who were manning a security checkpoint. One of the police officers died after stabbing him several times.
The prosecution also charged him with publicly transgressing the authority of HH the Amir, enticing people to join a group whose main agenda is to spread principles which will shatter the prevailing system in the country, destroying the properties of others and resisting arrest.
