19 Egyptian Pilgrims Die In Bus Crash In Saudi
Ninteen Egyptian pilgrims died early Saturday in a bus crash near the Saudi holy city of Madinah. Twenty-five other Egyptians were injured in the mishap that occurred on a highway connecting Madinah to Makkah, MENA reported. They were taken to several hospitals in Madinah, the agency said, citing an Egyptian official.
Eight of the dead have not been identified yet, said Hesham Al Naqeeb, an assistant foreign minister for consular affairs said.
“The Egyptian consulate in [the Saudi city of] Jeddah sent a team to the site where the bodies of the dead are kept to take the necessary measures,” he said without giving further details.
The victims were in Saudi Arabia, performing Umrah or the lesser Muslim pilgrimage.
Initial investigations suggested that the bus overturned after the driver, an Asian man, dozed off while at the wheel, Saudi media reported.
