183,000 Tons Of Indian Shrimps Have Flooded The Kuwaiti Markets Despite A Ban Issued On Their Import
About 183,000 tons of Indian shrimps have sneaked into the country and flooded the Kuwaiti markets despite a ban issued on their import.
According to an informed source, Indian shrimps found their way to the Kuwaiti markets despite ministerial decisions that banned them due to white spot disease (Ichthyophthirius multifiliis).
Kuwait Municipality ignored the ban for more than 20 days. During that period, a shipment came to Kuwait and reached points of sale before the municipality could send a circular to the entry points.
The ministerial decisions were issued in January 2017 and were published in the official gazette, but the border points were sent the circular on February 9.
The source accused the concerned authorities of “sleeping on duty” for failing to implement the decisions on the ban, affirming that their negligence paved way for the flooding of the markets with the banned shrimps.
Indicating that large quantities of these shrimps are still stocked for trade to this day, he urged Kuwait Municipality to take necessary measures to withdraw the remaining quantity of the banned shrimps off the shelves.
