135 Kuwaitis And Residents Were Killed In 29,000 Traffic Accidents In Five Months
In response to recent traffic statistics that showed eight traffic accidents happen every hour in Kuwait, the Ministry of Interior has tightened procedures to control those who disregard the traffic law. This is primarily due to recklessness, talking on the phone while driving, which has become a common occurrence among drivers.
Al-Qabas reported that approximately 29,000 accidents were reported during the first five months of 2023, which led to the death of 135 residents and citizens - an average of 27 victims a month.
Approximately 5,800 accidents occur every month in the country, or 193.3 accidents per day on average, which requires concerted efforts by civil society institutions and state agencies, led by the Ministry of Interior, to uphold the traffic law.
There was a need for an integrated plan to reduce reckless behavior and increase awareness of the seriousness of violations, excessive speed, red-light crossings, and other causes of death and serious injury.
Traffic laws need to be amended and penalties should be increased, according to the sources. One of the main causes of fatal accidents is driving under the influence of drugs as a result of which many reckless motorists cross the red lights and drive at crazy speeds, exposing their lives and the lives of others to danger.
To date, more than 2.4 million cars ply the country's roads, with more than 1.6 million valid driving licenses.
According to the sources, these risks must be addressed, and traffic accidents should be prevented by instituting awareness plans and imposing the prestige of the law. Among the cases transferred to hospitals where injuries crippled their victims for life, the sources reported “tragedies, permanent disabilities, and clinical death.” The economic and social repercussions of these injuries were severe.
Accidents occur for six main reasons
- Not paying attention while driving
- Using a mobile phone
- Wrong side overtaking
- Failure to maintain the vehicle
- Recklessness and speed.
- Potholes and damaged roads
Traffic violations, which result in fatal accidents, often kill young people in the absence of adherence to traffic laws despite continuous awareness campaigns conducted by the General Traffic Department.
Medical Emergency Department sources told Al-Qabas that they deal with a large number of reports every day, whether they are related to traffic accidents or other emergency or non-urgent cases, and that some of the cases are transferred to hospitals with emergency departments, while others are treated elsewhere.
According to the sources, the emergency medical operations room deals with a variety of road accidents on a daily basis, sometimes causing several injuries to more than one person in the same accident. According to these sources, 10-15 accidents occur each day, whereas accident rates increase during official holidays, reaching 25 accidents, especially on weekends.
