Unionists In Kuwait Call For Pay Increases For Civil Servants
To cope with the rising costs of living amid global economic woes, a Kuwaiti unionist has called on the government to raise civil servants' salaries.
The National Employees' Union deputy chairman Khalid Al Barrak said the salary rise should reflect the "marked increase" in prices in Kuwait and globally.
Al Barak, who also heads the Higher Education Ministry workers' union, said there is a big disparity [in pay] for civil servants with the same education degrees but working in different locations.
Kuwaiti newspaper Al Jarida quoted him as saying, "This makes them feel frustrated because they cannot meet the needs of their families.".
Kuwaiti government did not respond immediately, a country with 4.6 million people, mostly foreigners.
As the Ukraine war enters its 10th month, food and energy prices have risen worldwide.
