UN Expert Emphasizes Crucial Role Of School Visit To Jahra Reserve In Youth Development
In a recent statement, UN expert Samia Al-Duaij highlighted the significance of a school students' visit to the Jahra Reserve, marking a pivotal step in fostering confidence and expanding the horizons of participants in the "Young Ambassadors" program. Now in its second year, this initiative operates in collaboration with various diplomatic agencies and organizations within Kuwait.
Al-Duaij emphasized that the current season of the program places a strong emphasis on climate action and raising awareness about climate justice. She underscored the importance of equipping the younger generation with the knowledge to tackle the challenges posed by climate change, as they are poised to become future leaders inheriting the consequences of environmental issues.
Speaking to Al-Rai, Al-Duaij explained that the "Young Ambassadors" program aims to nurture the skills of gifted students, empowering them to become leaders and activists in fields aligned with their abilities and interests. The visit to Jahra Reserve is seen as a valuable opportunity for participants to enrich their experiences and make informed decisions regarding their future professional paths, contributing meaningfully to their communities.
Dr. Abdullah Al-Zaidan, Deputy Director General of the Technical Affairs Sector at the Environment Public Authority, provided insights into the reserve during the visit. Established in 1987, the Jahra Reserve stands as a vital location for migratory birds, hosting approximately 400 species. Dr. Al-Zaidan detailed its four ecosystems – wild, sabkha, fresh water, and coastal – underscoring its role in promoting the concept of ecotourism.
Highlighting the reserve's area of 3.8 square kilometers with an expansion of approximately 18 square kilometers, Dr. Al-Zaidan stressed its pivotal role in community awareness of environmental issues. The reserve, having witnessed programs to rehabilitate the mangrove plant that existed in Kuwait before the 1940s, plays a crucial role in preserving the environment for future generations.
In conclusion, Dr. Al-Zaidan expressed the Environment Agency's commitment to collaborating with government agencies, organizations, and international bodies in Kuwait to enhance environmental awareness and uphold nature and biodiversity, aligning with the objectives of the development plan.
