Taking Action Against Illegal Airport Passenger Services
Kuwait’s Acting Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior, Sheikh Talal Al-Khaled, issued immediate instructions for a crackdown on illegal passenger services at Kuwait International Airport in response to complaints from airport taxi drivers and to protect retirees with official permits.
These instructions follow reports of harassment and crowding experienced by retired citizens who operate airport taxis from some private vehicle owners, according to informed security sources. It has negatively impacted the earnings of legal airport taxi drivers because these individuals offer unsanctioned passenger pickup services at exorbitant fees.
A significant number of traffic investigation officers will be deployed starting tomorrow, Wednesday, as well as bolstered airport security personnel on round-the-clock duty. The primary purpose of their work is to apprehend residents who load passengers illegally and deport them as soon as possible. The vehicles of illegal residents (Bedoon) will be impounded for two months, and they will be detained for 48 hours as a precaution.
Minister Al-Khaled's swift action aims to put an end to such activities that undermine the rights of passengers arriving at Kuwait International Airport as well as retirees' livelihoods. Travelers can obtain transportation services from retired taxi drivers who hold permits from the General Administration of Civil Aviation and are accredited at the airport. As opposed to this, private vehicle owners are often unidentified individuals, some of whom have been reported to deceive travelers by accepting money for fake hotel reservations.
There is also scheduled to be a meeting between taxi owners and the Undersecretary of the Ministry of Interior and security leaders in the near future. The purpose of this meeting is to discuss the demands of taxi owners and collaborate on finding solutions to the ongoing issues at Kuwait International Airport.
