Remarkable 119 Kidney Transplants In 11 Months In Kuwait
Dr. Saja Sorour, head of the organ transplantation department at the Hamed Al-Issa Center, says transplant services have undergone a qualitative shift and a major renaissance in recent years. The Hamed Al-Issa Center has become the second largest center in the Middle East after Iran in terms of kidney donations from brain-dead patients, she said in a press release yesterday.
According to Dr. Surour, kidney transplant operations in Kuwait increased by 19 percent over last year. Over the last year, 119 organ transplant operations have been conducted, a 19 percent increase over the previous year. These numbers are expected to increase to about 131 operations by the end of December 2023. The number of kidney transplant cases from living donors reached 67 cases or 56 percent. This year, 52 kidney transplants were performed from braindead donors, an increase of about 4 percent from last year.
The operations
An average of two kidney transplant operations are performed each week in the country from living and brain-dead donors. With the efforts of the doctors and the center's administration, kidney transplant operations have experienced an unprecedented shift and the number of operations has risen to three per week. According to Dr. Sorour, the Hamed Al-Issa Center is one of the most important organ transplant centers in the Middle East and Gulf region. In addition to providing basic and secondary services, the center also provides natural and artificial arteriovenous connections, as well as peritoneal dialysis connections for dialysis patients.
According to her, the center has performed about 270 dialysis services from the beginning of the year through the present, including 193 hemodialysis and 77 peritoneal dialysis. The specialized medical staff, especially the surgeons, internal medicine doctors, pharmacists, and nurses, were praised by Dr. Sorour. She highlighted the effective presence of the Hamed Al-Issa Center in international forums and conferences by participating in working papers and many studies and research related to kidney diseases and surgeries, making it a global leader in kidney transplants.
