Prison Term Slashed In ‘tenders Bribery’ Issue
The Court of Appeals, headed by Judge Hani Al-Hamdan, cancelled the ruling of a lower court in the case of ambulance tenders bribery in the Ministry of Health – 10 years imprisonment for the vicechairman of the Central Agency for Public Tenders, reports Al-Rai daily. The higher court then sentenced the vice-chairman to four years in prison with hard labor, in addition to dismissal from his job and payment of KD290,000 — the estimated value of the bribes including fines.
It also upheld the ruling on the four-year imprisonment of a businessman while another defendant – an expatriate – was acquitted. Earlier, the Public Prosecution presented the report of Kuwait Anti-Corruption Authority (Nazaha) about bribery in the tenders for procurement of ambulances at the ministry The prosecution charged the vice-chairman of the agency with bribery as he accepted bribes from the other defendants for himself and his wife, including three cars from the car agency that won the tender at a value of KD148,000. Meanwhile, the Public Prosecution is conducting an investigation with four Kuwaitis who are believed to be belonging to the Lebanese Hezbollah cell, reports Al-Rai daily. The daily gave no details of investigation.
