Mosque Bombed In Pakistan, At Least 45 Killed

04 March 2022 International

During Friday prayers, worshippers were gathered to pray when the blast occurred. The explosion took place inside a Shiite Muslim mosque in the northwest city of Peshawar on Friday, killing more than 45 people and wounding dozens of others, many of them critically, police said.

Waheed Khan, a local police official, said the explosion took place in the Kucha Risaldar mosque in Peshawar's old city just as people gathered for Friday prayers. As ambulances raced through narrow streets carrying the injured to Lady Reading Hospital, doctors worked feverishly.

While neither the Islamic State group nor violent Pakistani Taliban organizations immediately claimed responsibility for the blast, similar attacks have been carried out in the region, located near the border with Afghanistan.

Witness Shayan Haider had been preparing to enter the mosque when a powerful explosion threw him to the ground.

He said, "I opened my eyes and there was dust and bodies everywhere.".

Doctors struggled to move the wounded into operating rooms at Lady Reading Hospital's emergency department.

Priam Imran Khan condemned the attacks.
