Man Acquitted Of Drug Trading

The Court of Cassation upheld the ruling of the Court of Appeals which acquitted an individual of trading in heroin, opium and psychotropic substances, reports Al-Seyassah daily. This led to the cancellation of the verdict of the Criminal Court that sentenced the accused to life imprisonment, as the highest court took into consideration the absence of incriminating evidence.

Attorney Anam Haidar, who appeared in court on behalf of his client, argued that the arrest and search procedures were invalid. He also pointed out that the documents presented as evidence do not show that his client possessed the confiscated drugs and psychotropic substances for the purpose of trading. The court stated in the merits of its ruling that the officer in charge of the case failed to prove the guilt of the accused in the report of his investigations and his testimony in front of the Public Prosecution. It added the the accused was not arrested in the act of selling or purchasing the confiscated items.
