Kuwaiti Doctor Faces Trial For Sham Surgery
An Kuwaiti doctor in a private hospital is facing trial on charges of deceiving a patient in a first-of-its-kind case. The doctor informed the patient that she urgently needed spinal surgery, anesthetized her, and then demanded 6,000 Kuwaiti dinars from her upon awakening.
A second opinion at another hospital revealed the truth six months after the incident, according to court documents. It turned out she hadn’t undergone any surgical procedure; all the doctor had done was anesthetize her for a few hours.
According to Hooraa Al-Habib, the victim's defense attorney, this case is one of the most bizarre in the field of medicine and violates Kuwaiti law. In her profession, she called for severe punishment for the accused doctor, stressing the seriousness of the offense.
While the misdemeanor court reversed the public prosecutor's decision to dismiss the case, it has retried the accused doctor. In the case, he is accused of deceiving the patient, claiming she needed urgent spinal surgery, and wrongfully taking the specified amount without authorization.
