Kuwait Stresses Human Rights' Importance
According to Kuwaiti government statements, human rights must be promoted and respected, and peace is a fundamental principle of human rights. In order to achieve a sustainable world, cooperation and coordination among member countries, regional and sub-regional organizations, UN agencies, government, and NGOs will be essential,” attache Abdullah Al-Asfour told the UN General Assembly on Wednesday evening when discussing the Human Rights Council's report. According to him, UN bodies are always striving to ensure that people throughout the world enjoy basic rights to achieve sustainable development in a peaceful, secure, and safe environment.
While affirming the importance of refugee protection, Kuwait has reaffirmed its support for the UN refugee agency (UNHCR) in returning refugees to their homes or settlements across the globe. In remarks to the UN General Assembly's third committee, Kuwait's attache Rashed Al-Abhoul stressed the importance of protecting UNHCR workers who work in hazardous conditions. Some 25 percent of UNHCR workers work in hazardous locations.
As Kuwait and the UNHCR celebrated this year's 31st anniversary of establishing their office in Kuwait, the partnership helped the UN agency improve its operations to assist those suffering from armed conflicts or natural disasters indiscriminately. According to Al-Abhoul, about 100 million people, many of them from Arab countries, have fled to safe havens due to conflicts, violence, natural disasters, climate change, or human rights abuses. Meanwhile, he praised UNRWA for providing health care and education to over five million Palestinian refugees.
