Kuwait has arrested a pair of illegal residents for spreading online rumors that "undermine national unity," the interior ministry said on Tuesday.

The suspects, through fake (social media) accounts, were also posting content that defames and instigates bullying to personalities, the ministry said in a statement, adding that criminal surveillance led to their arrests.

A trove of screen apparatuses, computers and portable hard drives were found in their possession, the ministry said, while legal action will be launched against them.

Meanwhile, the Director of the Cyber Crime Department at the Ministry of Interior Colonel Abdulaziz Al-Mutawa revealed that 750 cyber crime cases were recorded in the first quarter of 2021. In 2020, the number of cybercrime cases totaled 3,300 and most of which were related to the corona pandemic; while the total number of cases recorded in 2019 was 4,550.
