It Is Disturbing And Painful To See The Landfill Condition

On Thursday morning, the Environmental Affairs, Food, and Water Security Committee visited the waste dumping site on the Southern Seventh Ring Road to assess environmental conditions and identify potential violations. In their tour of the site, the committee, led by Chairman Representative Dr. Hamad Al-Matar and MP Daoud Marafi, expressed deep concern about the situation and questioned the role of the authorities.

On Thursday morning, members of the Environmental Affairs, Food, and Water Security Committee visited a waste dumping site on the Southern Seventh Ring Road.

As a result of its proximity to residential areas, MP Al-Matar described the conditions at Al-Mardam as disturbing and unacceptable. With an area of 4.5 million square meters, the landfill serves four governorates, receiving 7,000 tons of household waste and 12,000 tons of sand every day. It is the responsibility of the Minister of Municipality, the Minister of Oil, and all government stakeholders to manage waste scientifically in order to turn it into an economic asset.

The committee was surprised to find a Ministry of Interior truck loaded with liquor intended for destruction without an official report. Al-Matar condemned the act as both a moral crime and a waste of public funds, questioning the Environment Public Authority's role in monitoring and inspecting the landfill. Concerned about the potential leakage of methane gas, he called it a time bomb that could lead to disasters.

Al-Matar also noted the presence of slaughterhouse waste, which contributes to bacterial and chemical pollution. He criticized the absence of the Environment Public Authority during the visit and the lack of oversight by the Director of Waste Management. In his speech, Al-Matar called attention to the risks faced by workers and stressed the need for justice, particularly with regard to the rights of municipal employees.

During the visit, representative Daoud Marafi raised concerns about polluted gases rising from the landfill. Witnessing the situation firsthand, Marafi expressed regret over the random disposal of waste and the treatment of site workers. Considering the risks municipal employees face, he emphasized the importance of providing them with their entitled allowances.

He expressed surprise at what he deemed "economic neglect" and the failure to leverage international waste management experiences. According to him, the Environment Public Authority should conduct periodic pollution assessments on the site to protect workers' health. He criticized the lack of government support for recycling projects.
