Istanbul Airport Continues To Be Closed Due To Snow

25 January 2022 International

Istanbul, Turkey, extended the suspension of flights today, Tuesday, due to heavy snowfall, while the winter weather paralyzed transportation in the city, which is home to nearly 16 million people.

“The suspension of flights has been extended until 10:00 GMT today, January 25, due to bad weather,” Istanbul Airport said on its website. The Turkish authorities granted leave on Tuesday to workers in all public institutions to reduce traffic on the roads.

Istanbul Governor Ali Yerlikaya said on Twitter that private cars would not be allowed to drive before 10 a.m. GMT, while emergency teams continued to clear roads.

A video clip posted by the governor showed trucks and cars trapped in the snow. Turkish Airlines, the country’s official carrier, said on Monday it had canceled all flights from Istanbul Airport after it halted operations.
