An Attempt To Revive Domestic Worker Recruitment Talks With Ethiopia

13 February 2022 Kuwait

Bassam Al-Shammari, an expert in domestic labor affairs, tells Al-Jarida that Kuwait and Ethiopia will resume talks in the next few days to sign a memorandum of understanding on the recruitment of domestic workers from Addis Ababa. Al-Shammari pointed out that this move will open up a new market for the recruitment of these workers to fill Kuwait's acute labor shortage, citing that many local offices await the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding, as well as the conclusion of the first recruitment contracts with Addis Ababa, which should be completed soon.

According to al-Shammari, allowing domestic workers to come from a variety of countries is more important than limiting the issue to only a few or two countries, Kuwait currently struggles with a shortage of domestic workers, especially considering the low costs and salary rates for recruiting Ethiopian workers, helping ease the burden from the shoulders of citizens and residents. Allowing Ethiopian workers into Kuwait will create a balance in the market and solve the problem..

According to Al-Shammari, civil rights violations must be corrected and the law must be implemented in full to protect the rights of workers so the recruitment can continue without hindrances. In order to ensure that all parties' rights are protected, he requested that the Public Authority for Manpower conduct training courses for its employees, office owners, and employers 'online' so that they can become familiar with how to deal with employment issues, especially labor disputes.
