A day after the state government revoked the security cover of legendary Punjabi singer Sidhu Moosewala, the singer was shot dead Sunday in Mansa district of Punjab by unknown gunmen. Moosewala, 27, was travelling in a jeep with two friends when he was attacked at Jawahar Ke village, said Deputy Superintendent of Police (Mansa) Gobinder Singh.

Ranjeet Rai, the civil surgeon at the civil hospital in Mansa, told reporters that Moosewala had died. Another hospital is treating two other people who also sustained bullet injuries.

In the recent assembly election, he ran on the Congress ticket and lost to AAP candidate Vijay Singla from Mansa.

Punjab Police on Saturday withdrawn security from 424 people, including Shubhdeep Singh Sidhu, also known as Sidhu Moosewala.

AAP government for withdrawing Moosewala's security cover is being attacked by Congress and other political parties.

Bhagwant Mann, the Chief Minister, said there will be no leniency for anyone involved in the brutal murder.

The gruesome murder of Siddhu Moosewala has shocked and deeply saddened me. There will be no mercy for anyone involved. I pray for his family and all of his fans everywhere. Please stay calm," Mann said in a tweet.

Moosewala was welcomed into the Congress family by Amrinder Singh Raja Warring, who played a major role in getting him in the fold. Warring said he was "shocked beyond words" and demanded the dismissal of the government, which was led by the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP).

AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal and Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann were also singled out for punishment by BJP leader Manjinder Singh Sirsa, who had challenged the state government earlier this month.

Punjab's situation has been alerted to the Punjab Government through our warnings. Bhagwant Mann should be charged for negligence of his responsibilities as the Chief Minister, which has led to the death of #sidhumoosewala. Bhagwant Mann along with @ArvindKejriwal should be booked u/s 302,’’ he said.

Punjab's law and order has collapsed, according to former chief minister Amarinder Singh.

"Criminals are not afraid of the law.". It has been a miserably unsuccessful tenure for the Punjab AAP government. Punjab is unsafe!

Also removed from security were former lawmakers, the Jathedars of Takht Damdama Sahib and Takht Kesgarh Sahib, and Dera heads as well as serving and retired police officers.

Ahead of the Punjab assembly elections last year, Moosewala had joined the Congress.

Gun culture was being promoted by him in his songs, which led to criticism from several quarters. Additionally, his song ''Sanju'' allegedly promoted violence.

During the Covid-19 lockdown, he was photographed firing an AK-47 rifle at a firing range, and he was booked under the Arms Act and the Disaster Management Act.
