A Total Of 3,000 Expat Driving Licenses Blocked
About 3,000 expat driving licenses have been blocked by the Ministry of Interior's General Traffic Department after they violated the conditions, reports Al-Rai daily. The department took this step in the first week of its assessment of driving licenses issued to expatriates, in preparation for the final withdrawal of these licenses.
This is in compliance with the instruction of First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Sheikh Talal Al-Khaled to reopen the driving licenses file, while Assistant Undersecretary for Traffic and Operations Major General Jamal Al-Sayegh, and Director General of GTD Major General Yousef Al-Khadda were tasked to follow up the issue. An archive of licenses issued to expatriates was reviewed to determine their compliance with the conditions. Sources clarified the blocked licenses were not forged and were issued in accordance with the conditions; but the work permits of those holding these licenses were changed or they transferred to another field of work, so they no longer qualify based on the salary or profession.
Sources added “the assessment will take at least two months to complete. In case licenses are found to be not in compliance with the conditions, they will be blocked and the holders will be summoned. If the concerned person does not hand over the license; he will be blocked through the ‘My ID’ and ‘Sahel’ applications, such that he cannot complete any transaction in the Ministry of Interior. If he is found driving with a suspended license, he will be deported according to the law, sources said.
