An analysis by the General Secretariat of the Supreme Council for Planning shows that over a decade, 25,000 defendants were convicted in 19,000 drug-related cases. It emphasizes the fact that drugs are a major catalyst for a wide range of crimes, as evidenced by official medical reports confirming that many offenders abuse various narcotic substances to alter their mental state. According to security services' examinations, 70 out of every 100 drug-related cases are investigated.
According to a source within the security apparatus, an advanced plan has been approved to comprehensively combat drug smuggling based on the directives of Sheikh Talal Al-Khaled, First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior. As part of the plan, international coordination will be undertaken to dismantle smuggling operations at their source, stringent procedures and modern mechanisms will be implemented at ports to control contraband, and measures against drug traffickers within the country will be strengthened.
Further, 2023 will be the year in which poison seizures reach a 15-year high, according to the security source. The most recent operation included the confiscation of 800 kilograms of various drugs and approximately 1.5 million psychotropic pills within three months (from August to October 2023). Furthermore, an attempt to smuggle 800 kilograms of hashish from Lebanon to Kuwait was thwarted through international cooperation.
As a result of international coordination, smuggling gangs planning to transit drugs through Kuwait were also apprehended. In the past two months, 64 expatriates have been arrested for drug possession and subsequently referred to deportation prisons.
In diverse drug cases, the Ministry of Interior has successfully apprehended numerous defendants through its various sectors, according to official data. These individuals have been referred to the appropriate authorities for legal action. In addition, authorities seized 763 psychotropic pills and 6,150 kilograms of various drugs in a single day in August. Ten cases were registered against 15 defendants, and 15 kilograms of drugs and 7 kilograms of psychotropic substances were seized from postal parcels. In addition, 14 cases were filed against 14 individuals, resulting in the seizure of 250,000 psychotropic pills and 11 kilograms of narcotics. Other unrelated seizures during the same month resulted in the seizure of 8,130 pills.
Sheikh Talal Al-Khaled, Kuwait's First Deputy Prime Minister, stressed Kuwait's commitment to fighting drug dealers. Over the past two years, he cited “unprecedented seizures of drugs of various types and quantities,” emphasizing how drug smuggling gangs have heightened their targeting of Gulf Cooperation Council countries, and how it is imperative to protect the region's youth and prevent the establishment of a thriving drug trade.
