2.22m Sachets Of Tobacco Seized
The Shuwaikh Port customs officers have seized 2.22 million sachets of (chewing) tobacco — a type of smokeless tobacco product consumed by placing a portion of the tobacco between the cheek and gum or upper lip and teeth. The sachets were hidden inside three 40-foot containers, reports Al- Seyassah daily. The daily quoting security sources said the containers remained at the port for more than 90 days without anyone coming forward to claim the cargo. After the lapse of the 90-day period the warehouse inspection personnel affiliated to the General Administration of Customs at the Northern Ports Customs Department suspected the cargo which came from an unidentified Gulf country.
After taking necessary permission from the concerned authority one of the containers was opened and it was found to contain 108,000 bags of (Best) brand and 3,000 of (Misk); in the container inspectors found 109,000 of (Best) brand tobacco, and the third contained two million (Femel) brand sachets. It is noteworthy to mention the import of chewing tobacco is forbidden by law because it falls under the category of drug consumption and chewing tobacco causes throat cancer. The administration has warned everyone not to smuggle narcotics and prohibited goods in all their forms and types into the country to avoid punishment.
