“women And The Parliamentary Family”: Permanent Residency For Kuwaiti Children

08 February 2021 Kuwait

The Women, Family and Children Affairs Committee completed in its meeting today the meetings of government agencies and public benefit societies to find out their procedures in serving women, family and children issues, and approved a proposal to grant the children of Kuwaiti women permanent residence and priority in employment after Kuwaitis, and to treat them like Kuwaiti in ministries and state institutions.

The head of the committee, Deputy Osama Al-Shaheen, said that the committee met during its previous meetings with 17 public benefit societies, and today it met with 5 governmental and civil bodies: the Ministry of Social Affairs, the Supreme Council for Family Affairs, the Ministry of Interior, the National Office for Human Rights and the Ministry of Endowments.

Al-Shaheen called for the need for coordination, communication and integration between government agencies, given the multiplicity of these bodies, as well as increasing media awareness and awareness of the role of these bodies to enable citizens to benefit from these services. Al-Shaheen indicated that the government agencies that attended the meeting were informed of the urgent and urgent need to activate child protection centers and shelter for battered women, indicating that these centers are constructed and ready, but they are empty and do not include any human cadres to do their work. He emphasized that the committee is currently working on close follow-up to activate these centers to implement local and international legal obligations, indicating that the committee intends to organize a field visit to these centers and pay to expedite their opening.

He explained that the committee obtained a promise from the government side to abide by the issuance of the executive regulations for the Domestic Violence Law during the legally prescribed period, which ends in the middle of next March. On the other hand, Al-Shaheen said that the committee approved a proposal submitted by Deputy Dr. Hamad Al-Matar, by granting the children of a Kuwaiti woman married to a non-Kuwaiti permanent residency and priority in employment after Kuwaitis, and treating them like a Kuwaiti in the ministries and state institutions.

And he indicated that some of these acquisitions exist, but are conditional on government controls that empty them of their content, such as if the treatment like a Kuwaiti continues until the age of 21 years, after which these privileges are withdrawn.
