Iran said on Saturday that the Durra gas field belongs to Iran, Kuwait and Saudi Arabia, and that Tehran reserves the right to exploit it after signing the agreement last week between Kuwaiti Oil Minister Dr. Muhammad Al-Faris and Saudi Energy Minister Prince Abdul-Aziz bin Salman bin Abdul-Aziz to develop the Al-Durra oil field for its exploitation.

Aramco Gulf Oil Company and Kuwait Gulf Oil Company are preparing to establish the Al-Khafji Joint Operation Company to conduct the engineering studies necessary for development of the field in accordance with best practices, modern technologies, and environmental-friendly designs that are efficient and effective both from a capital and operational standpoint.

Iranian Foreign Ministry tweeted: "Arash/Durra is a joint gas field between Iran, Kuwait, and Saudi Arabia." According to Iranian sources, a portion of the field is located in unspecified waters between Iran and Kuwait, and Iran reserves the right to explore and exploit the resource.

Saeed Khatibzadeh, a spokesman for the Iranian Foreign Ministry, said Kuwait and Saudi Arabia's latest action, which came within the scope of a cooperation agreement, was "an illegal step that has no impact on the legal status of the field," adding that Iran has not given its approval.

Iran is prepared to engage in negotiations on how to invest in this field with Kuwait and Saudi Arabia and to continue bilateral negotiations with Kuwait following a previous round of negotiations on delineating the continental shelf boundaries, as well as begin tripartite negotiations between these three countries.
