The Breeding Of Pets Is A Rising Cause Of Divorce Among Kuwaiti Couples

11 February 2024 Kuwait

In a twist of irony, the nurturing and compassion associated with pet ownership have become sources of conflict in Kuwaiti households, leading to marital discord and divorce proceedings.

A reliable insider disclosed that at least 40 divorce filings among Kuwaiti couples in 2023 were directly linked to disputes over household pets. Courtroom testimonies revealed a recurring theme: "One partner's excessive attachment and devotion to their pets lead to friction within the marriage, as the other partner demands equal attention and care."

In one case, a husband cited his wife's overwhelming devotion to their dog as grounds for divorce. He lamented that the dog received more care and attention than he did, with his wife providing it four meals a day, grooming it meticulously, and even organizing recreational outings to beaches and parks for its mental well-being.

The husband's plea before the court echoed his frustration: "She was supposed to prioritize me, but the dog seemed to occupy her attention more than I did."

The insider highlighted that disputes over excessive cat ownership also contributed to marital breakdowns, pushing some couples to separate.

Despite attempts at reconciliation, some spouses adamantly refuse to relinquish their pets, arguing that pet ownership brings them psychological solace and inner tranquility. Consequently, these irreconcilable differences escalate, thwarting any efforts at mediation between the estranged partners.
