Road Repairs To Begin Soon - Minister
Minister of Public Works (MPW) Jenan Bushehri has promised to begin road maintenance work in early April, amid questions about the ‘lengths’ of roads that the ministry can carry out maintenance on a daily basis so that citizens know the time frame when the work will be completed and the roads will be safe for driving, reports Al-Rai daily.
While informed sources in the Ministry did not rule out that the ministry will meet this time with its commitment to start maintenance operations, it expected that “these operations will last for at least three years.” “The total area of asphalt in residential areas excluding the new areas is 50 million square meters, while the highways are about 20 million square meters with the new road projects not included,” pointing out that “90 percent of the total roads are in a dilapidated condition and need radical maintenance.”
The sources pointed out that ‘after the tests on the asphalt plants, only four factories have won the confidence of the ministry, one of them a company that is reportedly among the companies that has committed serious violations which surfaced during the heavy rains last November.
The sources indicated some of these factories (about 20 of them) need what the ministry called minor adjustments and others major adjustments while a large proportion of them not completely fit, according to a report prepared by the ministry. “The road repairs not only include asphalt, and the ministry has already signed a number of contracts for the maintenance of roads and lanes in the interior areas.
