Residence Link To Passport Expiry From January 1
The decision to link duration of residency permits with the validity of passports of expatriates residing in the State of Kuwait will be applied from Jan 1, 2016 based on Article 12 of Law 17/1959 and Article 15 of executive bylaw of Law 640/1987.In a press statement issued by Ministry of Interior, Colonel Mohammad Rashid Al-Rahian from the Central Department for Residency Systems which is affiliated to the General Department for Residency Affairs at Ministry of Interior affirmed that the department has been exerting efforts to develop the systems and improve the procedures for serving citizens and expatriates and facilitating their transactions.
Stressing that the grace period given to expatriates to check the validity of their passports is sufficient for them to rectify their status, he explained that the residence permit will be cancelled as soon as the passport expires and the new residency permit will not be issued until the passport is renewed. They have to visit the Residency Affairs Department in the ministry to register the data of their new passports and transfer the residence permits from the old passport to the new one.
Colonel Al-Rahian urged expatriates to keep track of their passports’ validity and apply for their renewal prior to the expiry of the passport. He also requested citizens to monitor the validity of their domestic workers’ passports to avoid violating the law. He indicated that the department is closely coordinating with the Public Relations and Security Media Department to launch awareness campaigns for informing citizens and expatriates about decisions in this regard, adding that the department has requested Undersecretary of Ministry of Foreign Affairs, General Department for Information Systems and Public Relations and Security Media Department to activate the decision.
