Recruitment Of Domestic Labor From 15 Nations For Kuwait
According to Al-Qabas daily, Durra Company for Domestic Labor Recruitment has begun negotiating with 15 countries to send domestic workers to Kuwait. As well as Bangladesh, these countries include Nepal, Ghana, Vietnam, Uganda, Sierra Leone, Tanzania, Cameroon, Madagascar, Ivory Coast, Burundi, Zimbabwe, Papua Guinea, Mali, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The daily obtained a copy of a government document, stating the company is awaiting approval from some of the above-mentioned countries to begin recruitment.
In response to the series of events concerning the Republic of the Philippines, the company contacted several domestic labor recruitment agencies in the Republic of Sri Lanka. On its website, it states that Sri Lankan workers can always be requested, adding that a large number of domestic workers are available. In addition, it was revealed that negotiations were underway with the Philippine Department of Labor and Employment, and a meeting was held with the Assistant Labor Secretary there, at which an agreement was reached to increase the number of recruitment agencies with each job order to four. Therefore, 100 domestic workers will be shared by each agency.
According to the Labor Law of the Philippines, the company can contract with two agencies and each job order specifies 50 domestic workers for each agency. Therefore, the number of recruited workers will increase by approximately 200 percent compared to the previous method, which will benefit Kuwaiti families; and recruitment costs include the worker’s travel ticket from origin to Kuwait, the company reported.
Moreover, since September 2021, the company has increased efforts to restructure and improve its revenue; thereby, decreasing the annual loss from KD409,000 to KD188,000 - a decline of 54 percent. In order to simplify the recruitment process for citizens, the company asked the Consumer Cooperative Societies Union to allow it to open its branches in cooperative societies. The Al-Salam Cooperative Society plans to open such a branch soon, and work is underway to discuss the idea with other cooperatives so that branches can be opened whenever they are needed.
